The Frustrations of DMOZ

I am sure that we have all been there……trying to get your website listed in DMOZ. This seems to be the topic of conversation on many of the top webmaster forums. A lot of new comers are trying to get their site listed on DMOZ because they think that it will be a huge traffic boost and their troubles will be over. Well, if you haven’t already noticed, getting your site listed in DMOZ is no easy task! I submitted a site about a year and a half ago, and it has finally been accepted into DMOZ. It was a good feeling that I finally got accepted into the infamous directory, but then I realized that it is really not what it used to be anymore. DMOZ lost its luster when it started banning editors and taking massive bribes for site inclusion (if you are a new webmaster, I bet you didn’t know that you can pay off editors to get included faster)! There are some nice editors, but most are very rude and will not respond to any form of contact.
I have seen many that ask if it is ok to submit to DMOZ multiple times with the same website. Well, I have not come across a case where it is ok to do this. It will not only waste time, but it could get your URL banned completely and there go your chances all together. If you want to use your time wisely, why don’t you submit, then go build links at other places while you wait. There have also been multiple threads on forums that say they will pay people to get their site included in DMOZ. Why don’t you just use that money for a better cause instead of wasting it on a free directory that might not even accept your link anyway! If you are lucky, you can submit and you might included after a few months, but then again there are the ones that never get included. If I were you, I would use my time wisely and just bypass Dmoz all together and build links in other quality directories because this directory is heading south very quickly and a lot of webmasters are not even sure that Google will use it anymore as an informational site.
