New to SEO or just looking for a quick refresher course? Perhaps you’re looking to point someone in the right direction so they don’t take the wrong first step forward?

We’ve had a chance to provide you with plenty of useful information for the novice to the experienced, and everything in between. But today specifically, we’re going to provide you with 10 places that everyone new to SEO should really invest some time into learning about, for the betterment of their site as well as the internet in general.

Let’s start with the basics:

Search Engine Guidelines:

What better place to start then where the search engines want you to? These sites will detail all the information you could possibly need regarding the guidelines in which each of the three major search engines want your site to conform. Many simply use these to keep themselves out of the “what not to do” area, but it’s better that you actually understand them then simply using them to keep yourself off the banned list.

Common Search Engine Tools:

Ranging from paid services to free services, these tools will provide you with the basics you need to kick off your SEO understanding. Each one has its own benefit and reason for being on this list, so don’t discredit it simply because it costs. We wouldn’t post anything up here that we don’t recommend or use ourselves.

  • Google Keyword Tool - (Free) This tool provides you with information regarding the competitiveness of a keyword and it’s organic listing by examining your site and what keywords you should optimize on it. As you require more information from this tool, you’ll find that the only way to achieve that is by participating in some paid search yourself, but the benefit pays for itself as it teaches you as you go along.
  • SEOmoz Tools - SEOmoz is one of the best places to start for any of your SEO related needs. So when it comes to tools, you should definitely give them a try. Although many of their tools do cost (A monthly fee for their full service), the ability to measure your SEO page strength, check how well you’re optimized to your keywords, and even view how difficult it will be to achieve your desired rank are well worth the price they charge. You can always try out their more powered down version before you sign up for their subscription program.
  • SEO Book.com tools - (Free) These programs are pretty worthwhile for anyone interested in SEO. You can download them and take advantage of the SearchStatus toolbar that will provide you with plenty of information on your Firefox browser to show you the exact status of the website you’re visiting and how well it’s doing.

Other Services:

The rest of these links don’t necessarily fall into any specific category. All of them offer some additional learning that you should take advantage of. Why is that exactly? Well, you can never really learn enough, can you? If you answered yes to that, perhaps it’s time you quit the internet.
