Top Five SEO Tips From Matt Cutts
Google Guy Matt Cutts had a chance to sit down earlier this month with USA Today and discuss with them a little bit about SEO. In the interview, Cutts referenced five tricks that everyone should follow when it comes to performing SEO on a website. A word of caution from the man himself, don’t over do any of these techniques as you may actually find yourself penalized or banned from the search engines for doings so. Without further ado:
- Highlight Your Keywords
If your goal is to be found for a specific keyword, make sure that the word is not only peppered throughout the specific page’s content, but that you also have it at the top (in the title) as well. Don’t use your keyword more than it needs to be used either, or Google may see that as keyword stuffing. - Utilize Your Tags
The meta-description and tags help signify what exactly your page is about and provide a little blurb that shows up in the search results as well. Not utilizing this is shooting yourself in the foot. - Seek Out Links
Getting links to your specific pages (deep links) or even your main page are the ways that your site begins to grow and become more relevant on the search engine results page. Reciprocal links are better than no links, but the best kind are one way links. - Create A Blog
Write on it often. If you don’t stay consistent, Google won’t give you any benefit from it. But if you do, it’s fresh content. - Take Advantage Of Free Tools
Of course, Matt Cutts pushes some great Google tools to use like Google Webmaster, XML-Sitemaps, and Google’s Local Business Center.
Most of these tips are pretty straight forward to an audience like yourself, but if you’re looking for something to share with your clients, this summary and the article itself might be exactly what you need to show them what you’re doing and why. Mainstream media’s entrance into the SEO world means that we’ll see a lot more eyes peeking over our shoulders. So instead of looking paranoid, let’s start sharing this with those we work with and for.
