Understanding The Benefit Of Link Directories

Posted by seoman 4 June, 2008

It’s understandable that when individuals first learn about the power of link building in SEO, they default to directory submissions. While there are some good directories out there that you can benefit a great deal from, there are plenty of junky ones that will either hurt you or provide you with no effect at all. But how can a directory not be beneficial, you ask? Simple, if the directory is full of ads or crashes, you’ve now got what appears to be a spammy or dead site linking directly to you which Google will count against you. Too many of these spammy or dead links and you’ll find yourself delisted.

Here are a few reputable link directories to get you started:

  • DMOZ - Kinda obvious, and it will take you FOREVER to get listed, but worth the wait when it actually happens.
  • Yahoo Directory - You can wait this one out with a free sub or you can pay the $299. Holds a lot of weight with Google it would seem.
  • JoeAnt.com - I’ve found it very useful, although it does cost and has no guarantee.

After you’ve hit the obvious, you’ll want to Google: "keyword" + directory. This will give you niche directories to list yourself in. If you avoid the ones full of ads and those with more than 100 outbound links on each page, you’ll be golden.
