Placing Your Blog In A Folder
When deciding to build a new website with an included blog, it’s a good idea to think more down the line then in the here and now, especially with where you place your blog on the site. Many people default into placing their blog on the root directory of their domain. This may work for a site that is solely a blog and will never be anything more, but what if you decide that you want to move forward with that domain and make it a full site? The process of moving a blog to a folder can make things very tricky and require you to put in a lot more work than is necessary if you simply think the process through from the beginning.
Having your blog in the /blog/ folder allows you to present your site for all it’s worth on the main domain. You also gain further deeplinks from not only your main page, but the fact that other sites will link to you through your blog directly. So instead of simply improving the ranking of your main domain, now you’ve got a high ranking deep page.
One of the biggest mistakes individuals make when deciding to go with this method is that they decide to use alternative names for the folder. Matt Cutt of Google explained that by naming your folder after your CMS, you’re simply promoting them and inadvertently adding another unnecessary keyword to your site.
