When Should You Start SEO?

One of the most common questions asked by those new to the search engine optimization field is “when should I start to SEO my site?”. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, there is only one correct answer that will allow you to develop your site to it’s maximum potential.

The answer is: at conception.

When building your site, through whatever method you choose, you’re making decisions that will either allow you to explore new opportunities or close you off from being able to easily and readily make decisions that will greatly benefit your website. Now, you can always rebuild your existing site to get it ready for proper SEO, but think of the time, effort, and budget that it took to just to get your site up and running initially. Why would you want to do that all over again?

Optimization from the start allows for everything you introduce to that site, be it new articles or new pages, to be picked up by the search engines and properly indexed. Your keywords will become more relevant as you go from optimizing your site for them to filling up your percentage of how often you use those starting at your first addition to your site. Not to mention that properly establishing your ping and trackback settings will greatly increase the number of other sites and individuals that will stumble across your work.

Now, don’t take this as you have to aggressively start your SEO campaign from day one. Understand that many sites do gain some steam and recognition just from proper optimization over time. However, it is important to grasp that not everyone is that fortunate, so don’t rely on it to gain results.

Optimizing a site from scratch can be fairly difficult and as such, the use of CMS like WordPress and TypePad have made this process easier. If you’re attempting to optimize your first site, you may want to explore what those solutions have to offer as they have plugins and other features that allow you to easily configure your website for maximum SEO potential in a matter of an hour.
