Is Yahoo! Site Directory Worth It?

You’re building up a reputable site and you’re looking for new places to gain authoritative links from when you come across the Yahoo! Site Directory. Sounds perfect. Yahoo! host it so clearly it’s got to have some pull, and it definitely does. But what bites you is the cost. $299 to SUBMIT a site to their directory. That doesn’t mean that they’ll actually accept your site. If your site is of adult content, then double that price. Plus, it’s an annually reoccurring price to boot!

But Yahoo! wouldn’t reject sites that fit their criteria, right? Unfortunately it seems that this is completely hit or miss. I’ve scoured several forums for to see if there is any rhyme or reason to which sites make it through and which don’t. I also couldn’t find any examples of how beneficial people had found their site being listed in the Yahoo! Site Directory. If you’re looking for higher rankings in Yahoo! then by all means this is probably worth the risk for you, but let’s face it, the rest of us are gunning for Google.

Google seems to put additional weight on the links from Yahoo! Site Directory, but at the end of the day, it’s just one link. That link isn’t even really contextual, although it is on a page geared towards your niche.

My advice? Take that $299 and find 10-20 sites that will write a blog post and review your site for you. Much better investment overall.
